So, How do your emotions help you in focusing on your task? Have you ever thought about what makes us angry? What makes you feel like crying? What make you laugh? Why do you feel absolutely nothing sometimes?
Well, you may say that your friends make you angry, your break-up makes you cry, some stand-up comedian makes you laugh & sometimes I feel nothing without any reason.
I will say yes, you are absolutely right. But let’s dig a little deeper. As you explain, the responses should be universal if our emotions function like this. Everyone should become aggressive when some dumb driver hits their car. Everyone should be sad after a breakup, but we don’t see that happening universally.
You may know people who stay very calm when people are violently charging at them. You may know people who don’t fall into depression after a breakup. So, why this happens?
Humans are driven by their emotions. We are emotional beings. Our brain release hormones in response to every situation—different hormones for different conditions. Like an infamous hormone, dopamine is responsible for our happiness. Serotonin makes us feel sad; Melatonin makes us fall asleep, and so on.
Do you know what the tricky part is in between? Our reaction to some situations makes our brain release those hormones. It is our reaction that makes us angry or sad. It’s not the action of anyone around us. So, by managing your response, you can alter the whole scenario. All you need is to control and manage your emotions by managing your thoughts. If someone scolds you, if you think he is cruel and he hates you, you will cry. If you manage yourself for a moment, reflect on what just happened from the other person’s perspective. You may end up being okay and acceptable. You may end up taking that criticism as constructive feedback.
My Personal Story of Emotional Management
Three months ago, I was coming out of a coffee shop when a car hit me so hard that my arm got fractured. For a moment, I couldn’t feel myself. Later, the driver took me to the hospital, and I found that the brakes of the other car got jammed, resulting in an accident. I LET THEM GO when I realized that they didn’t hit me intentionally and it was purely a technical fault. It was nothing extraordinary from my side. I just managed my emotions.
So, this was the context of our discussion on sleep. It will help you understand how important it is to manage them & now let me tell you how your sleep can make you manage your emotions effectively.
If you are sleeping correctly and taking enough sleep, your body will have enough time to regulate your emotions and hormones. If you are sleeping less than required, your body wont be able to regulate your endocrine system resulting in the dominance of emotions associated with a lethargic & dull life. Your emotions will be a challenge to control, and so does your hormones. So, this is how emotions help in focusing. Sleep enough so your body can regulate your functions well, resulting in an optimistic life.
